As thousands gather on the shores of Lake Rotorua this Matariki for the Aronui Matariki Drone Show, two of Polynesia’s most respected Dj’s are set to usher in the Māori new year with reflective sounds in a boutique live music experience.
Internationally acclaimed DJs Thomas Rose and Ethan James will perform together for the first time in Aotearoa (Rotorua) with Aronui’s Matariki Mixtape- Vol.9 a specially curated sunset-to-nightfall performance that blends soulful R&B, Polynesian rhythms, low-fi textures and reflective soundscapes in honour of the contemplative spirit of Matariki.
Taking place as part of the Aronui Matariki Drone Festival on Saturday July 11 at Terrace Kitchen, Vol. 9 offers an alternative to the high-energy dancefloor experience often associated with electronic music. Instead, audiences can expect a carefully crafted musical journey in different parts, designed to encourage reflection, remembrance and connection.
Following the success of Aronui’s award-winning Matariki Drone Show, which has become one of the largest Matariki celebrations in Aotearoa, Te Mātahi o te Tau extends the kaupapa beyond the sky and into sound, creating space for audience to pause, reconnect and consider the year that has passed while looking toward the year ahead.
Aronui CE/ Artistic Director Cian Elyse White, says the performance was intentionally programmed to reflect this year’s theme “Matariki herenga waka: For everyone”
“Matariki is a time for remembrance, gratitude and aspiration. We wanted to create a musical experience that honours those values. Thomas and Ethan are international DJ’s who are masters of creating atmosphere and connection through sound, specifically tied into polynesia, rhythm and blues. This is a boutique experience focussed on whanaungatanga and vibes”.
Known internationally for his soulful selections and genre-defying sets, Thomas Rose has built a reputation for blending contemporary R&B, jazz-infused grooves, Polynesian influences and global sounds into immersive listening experiences. His performances have captivated audiences across Aotearoa, Australia, the Pacific and beyond.
Joining him is Ethan James, one of Aotearoa’s most exciting emerging Dj’s. Drawing influence from Māori and Pacific musical traditions alongside contemporary soul, hip-hop and electronic music, James has become known for creating warm, deeply human sets that prioritise storytelling and emotional connection.
Together, the pair will weave a sonic tapestry celebrating the richness of Māori and Polynesian artistry, featuring music from established and emerging Indigenous artists alongside carefully selected international works.
“Music has always been a way for our people to remember, connect and dream,” says Rose. “For Matariki, we’re creating a space where people can simply be present with one another, celebrate the year that has passed, and welcome what is coming.”
Matariki Mixtape Vol. 9 forms part of Aronui’s wider Matariki programme, which brings together Indigenous storytelling, music, innovation and community celebration in one of Aotearoa’s most significant contemporary Matariki events. This has been made possible through the support of the government’s Events Boost Fund which is administered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. “This is one of many exciting events the Government is supporting in 2026. From world-class international and homegrown musical acts to sports fixtures and arts and cultural celebrations, these events will bring fans, visitors and a big boost to New Zealand’s economy,” Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says.
