The Voices In The Shadows Featuring TAME ITI

Wairea Company proudly presents ‘The Voices in the Shadows’ by Rangipo Ihakara. This indigenous musical explores the journey from darkness to light, offering cultural insights and truths about colonization, language, and cultural suppression. It reflects on historical experiences while fostering hope for the future through music, contemporary dance, and the voices of Māori, Pacific and Palestinian cultures.

Wairea Company is not just a performing arts company, they are a collaborative company and a home for Indigenous creatives, a safe space for our tamariki and adults to create, share, network and work together here in the Bay Of Plenty, with the support of Wairea in the hopes of growing and developing the art sector.

🌿✨ More than a century after pioneering schol 🌿✨ More than a century after pioneering scholar and Te Arawa legend Mākereti Papakura began her studies, Oxford University will honour her with a posthumous Master of Philosophy degree. Known to many simply as Maggie, she was the first Māori woman to complete a degree at Oxford.

In 2023, ARONUI honoured her legacy with a towering seven-storey mural by our friends the Dream Girls Collective in the heart of Rotorua — a tribute to her brilliance, courage, and leadership. We’re also deeply honoured to have her mokopuna, June Grant, serving on the ARONUI Board of Trustees. An outstanding artist and fierce champion of indigenous art, June’s contribution to ARONUI and the arts is a living testament to Mākereti’s enduring legacy.
